It’s known that in Wanli Period of Ming Dynasty Chinese people firstly got to know Western art, and western oil painting was firstly introduced to China through Guangdong. Consequently, Guangdong became the origin of Chinese oil painting. In a long period, as the only trading port of China, Guangzhou was the frontier of cultural integrity between east and west. In the end of 19th, the first generation of artists including Li Tiefu, a painter from Guangdong went abroad to learn western painting. When going back in the beginning of 20th, they sustained the western painting creation and education in China. Oil painters from Guangdong, for example, Hu Gentian, Feng Gangbai, Lin Fengmian, etc, attributed a lot to the development of the early Chinese oil painting and art education.

Lots of famous artists from different provinces has gathered in the Guangdong-centered Southern China up to now and influenced by the southern traditional culture. Compared to the northern artists of same ages, the Guangdong-based artists normally keep a low profile and therefore people know less about most of them and accordingly their art are less known to the country. Somehow, their artworks are mostly excellent whether in skills or expression of ideas. As a local art institute in Guangzhou, we should do something for them.

Shanghai Art Fair 2013 is obviously a good chance for us to display the oil paintings by famous painters in Southern China. On the occasion we recommend He Jianning and Li Jieping. He Jianning, an oil painter of Guangzhou Art institute, is well-known to Contemporary France art circle because of his abstract oil painting. The juxtaposition of his brilliance colors like bright yellow, vigorous green and strong red is really amazing. Li Jieping, the gold medal winner of the 11th national art exhibition, is widely accepted by China art circle for his deep-rooted realistic skills and expression of ideas. We are wondering if we could upgrade the comparatively weak status of southern oil painters through the works by them, and publicize these oil paintings both at home and abroad. 

Besides, we have brought Huang Zhongyang’s watercolor paintings and Zhong Zhiyuan’s sculptures. Huang Zhongyang is well-known to China for his watercolor paintings while Zhong Zhiyuan is one of the representatives of Guangdong sculpture.

A good artwork, which is both the spiritual substance and view in the heart, builds a special dialogue context because it is the material carrier of self-examination and soul-searching as well as the thought on the existence. These excellent works including oil paintings, watercolors paintings and sculptures, whether realistic or abstract, dreamy or localism, are created by southern famous artists. Therefore, these works of different motifs and tastes are the embodiment of diversity of southern art. We believe that they will trigger a special visual experience for the audiences.
